Escambia County, Florida — A United States Postal Service driver is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he intentionally drove his mail truck toward a 10-year-old boy, allegedly attempting to hit him after mistaking the child for a package thief.
The incident, which unfolded in a residential neighborhood late last month, has sparked outrage and prompted an internal investigation by federal postal authorities.
Package delivered to wrong address sparks confrontation
According to reports cited by local outlets, including WALA and WKRG, 41-year-old William White allegedly delivered a package to the wrong home on Kingfisher Way in Escambia County on December 27.
A report from the Florida Highway Patrol states that the child who lived at the residence noticed the package was intended for a different address. The boy reportedly placed the package on his electric scooter and attempted to deliver it to the correct home.
Authorities say White saw the child with the package and believed the boy was stealing it.
Driver allegedly steers USPS truck toward child
Investigators allege the situation escalated dangerously moments later.
According to the FHP report, White “purposely drove the USPS vehicle toward the child” and ran over the scooter. The child narrowly avoided being struck by moving into a nearby yard just before the scooter was hit.
The report further alleges that White retrieved the damaged scooter from beneath the truck, placed it into the USPS vehicle, and yelled at the child before driving away.
Second confrontation as relative intervenes
Authorities say White again drove his vehicle toward the child before leaving the area. A relative of the boy followed the USPS truck to confront the driver about what had happened.
During that confrontation, White allegedly threw the scooter into another nearby yard before leaving the scene, according to investigators.
No physical injuries to the child were reported, but officials emphasized that the incident could have ended far worse.

Arrest made days later at workplace
White was interviewed and arrested on December 31, when he arrived at work, authorities said. He now faces multiple charges, including:
- Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
- Petit theft
- Criminal mischief
Records show White was booked into the Escambia County Jail and later posted $5,500 bond.
USPS responds, confirms investigation
In a statement to the Pensacola News Journal, the United States Postal Service confirmed it is investigating the incident alongside local law enforcement.
“The U.S. Postal Service takes the safety and well-being of our customers and employees seriously,” the agency said.
“The Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is actively investigating this issue in partnership with local law enforcement.”
USPS also confirmed that White has been employed with the agency since 2025, but declined to comment further, citing personnel privacy rules.
Case raises serious safety concerns
The allegations have raised concerns among residents about accountability and safety, particularly when children are involved. Law enforcement officials stressed that vehicles can be deadly weapons when used recklessly or intentionally.
The case remains under investigation as it moves through the court system.
