San Mateo, CA- A 33-year-old man was apprehended by San Mateo police on Monday after he attempted to escape to Southern California in the wake of his pregnant girlfriend’s tragic demise on Sunday evening.
Authorities responded to a residence in San Mateo after receiving a distress call at around 6 p.m. Tragically, a 37-year-old woman and her unborn child were found deceased at the scene. According to the authorities, she was in the final stages of pregnancy.
Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the woman’s death, but have confirmed that she was discovered by her family members at the residence she shared with the suspect.
Based on witnesses and evidence found at the scene, the police developed suspicions about the woman’s boyfriend, Andrew Coleman. Utilizing advanced technology, detectives were able to track his movements as he headed toward Southern California.
San Mateo investigators reached out for help from various law enforcement agencies, such as the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department.
The West Covina Police Department successfully located the suspect’s car and apprehended him on Sunday night.
The mother of the victim, who preferred not to appear on camera, informed NBC Bay Area on Monday that Coleman left on Sunday evening with his belongings and a safe.
A family friend interviewed by NBC Bay Area described the killing as “surreal.”
“At this time, we can confirm a homicide was committed but an autopsy is being conducted but is not completed so we have no cause of death,” San Mateo Police reported.
San Mateo police detectives traveled to Southern California on Monday to conduct an interview with Coleman. Additionally, he is also facing charges in West Covina that are unrelated. However, Coleman will eventually be returned to the Bay Area to stand trial for murder.
