On Friday morning, in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, two ladies from Arizona were murdered when assailants opened fire on their vehicle, according to Mexican authorities.
An overturned, bullet-ridden white Nissan Pathfinder was discovered at around 10:30 a.m. on the Sonoyta-Caborca highway with the bodies of two men, ages 72 and 82, who were originally from the city of Caborca in Sonora, according to a news release from the Sonora attorney general’s office.
Authorities in Mexico searched the hamlet of Quitovac in the state of Sonora and spotted an abandoned Ford F150 that they believe is associated with the accused.
As reported by the attorney general’s office, the vehicle was searched by officials, and many weapons, ammo, and bulletproof vests were discovered.

The attack’s motivation was not immediately disclosed by officials, although Sonora has witnessed other instances of cartel violence in the past few years.
An American horticulture Ph.D. student went missing in June 2023 and was found dead in an SUV in Sonora; he had been shot seven times. The student had crossed the border to undertake research.
The municipality of Puerto Peñasco, on the Gulf of California, was the site of the discovery of seven bodies, according to Sonora prosecutors in March. Every one of the men who lost their lives had been shot while dressed in military uniform.
