Walker, MN – A Cass County sheriff’s deputy was airlifted to a hospital Sunday evening after a shooting involving law enforcement in rural Walker, where a male suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire. Authorities say the incident unfolded near homes in Turtle Lake Township, raising new concerns in an area that has now seen two use-of-force cases in just four months.
Reports of Gunfire Lead to Deadly Encounter
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the situation began around 4:37 p.m. when dispatchers received calls about gunshots near residences along Old Agency Drive and Onigum Road NW. Deputies responded to the scene and spotted a man walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road NW.
When officers attempted to make contact, the man ran from law enforcement, triggering a confrontation that quickly escalated.
Exchange of Gunfire Leaves Deputy Injured
As deputies pursued the fleeing man, a gunfire exchange broke out. During the incident, one Cass County deputy was shot and required emergency air transport to a hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Officials have not yet released the deputy’s condition.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said.
Authorities confirmed that body-worn cameras were active and recording during the incident. Deputies involved have been placed on standard administrative leave while the investigation proceeds, in accordance with department policy.
Why This Matters to the Community
The shooting marks the second officer-involved use-of-force case in the area since August, prompting renewed questions about public safety and police response in rural parts of the county.
“It’s the second use of force incident in about four months,” authorities noted.
In the earlier August case, deputies shot a knife-wielding suspect who allegedly threatened to kill employees at a local Dollar General store. That suspect reportedly charged an officer and was shot in the left arm.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
Residents in Turtle Lake Township and the greater Walker area continue to navigate concerns after another violent confrontation between police and a suspect in a typically quiet region. With body camera footage now available for review, investigators are working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
Officials have not released the identities of either the injured deputy or the deceased suspect, and additional details are expected as the investigation moves forward.
