California (MJP) –
In a heartbreaking case in California that has concluded with a heavy sentence, a 22-year-old mother, identified as M. Silvey, has been sentenced to 33 years to life in prison after being found guilty of intentionally poisoning her young daughter with a deadly mix of prescription pills. The incident has drawn attention due to the horrific nature of the crime and the young age of the victim.
Silvey faced severe legal consequences following her actions that led to the death of her two-year-old daughter. Silvey was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping, to which she pleaded guilty in May. The sentencing, announced by the county’s prosecutors, marks the end of a disturbing case that began with a distressing emergency call on January 5, 2023.
On that day, authorities were alerted to an unresponsive toddler in a vehicle. First responders rushed the 2-year-old girl to the hospital by ambulance, but she tragically passed away later that evening. An autopsy revealed a shocking detail: the young girl’s system contained seven to fifteen different prescription pills, leading investigators to suspect foul play.
As the investigation unfolded, it became clear that this was not a tragic accident but a deliberate act of harm. Silvey was arrested in August 2023 after a thorough seven-month investigation by the police department. It was determined that Silvey had intentionally given her daughter multiple prescription pills and then, realizing the child was suffering from symptoms of an overdose, drove her to a remote area to delay medical intervention.
Initially, Silvey claimed her daughter had accidentally accessed the medication bottles at home. However, her story later changed, leading to further suspicions about her involvement. Faced with the prospect of a lie detector test, Silvey attempted to evade law enforcement by faking a suicide and fleeing. She was eventually located and provided conflicting accounts regarding how her daughter came into contact with the pills, including admitting to leaving medication bottles open that she had stolen from her mother.

The courtroom heard emotional statements from Rylee’s grandfathers, who expressed their profound grief and incomprehension at the actions of Silvey. J. Harrison, the paternal grandfather, called the act “monstrous” and lamented the lost potential of his granddaughter. T. Silvey, the maternal grandfather, reflected on the double loss of his daughter to prison and his granddaughter to this tragic incident, describing the outcome as a “lose-lose situation.”
This case serves as a grim reminder of the dire consequences of criminal negligence and substance abuse. It also highlights the importance of mental health support for parents, particularly those dealing with significant personal challenges. As Silvey begins her lengthy prison sentence, the victim’s family is left to mourn the young life lost in such devastating circumstances. The District Attorney’s Office has reiterated its commitment to justice, hoping this sentence can provide some solace to those affected by this tragedy.
