The Seattle Police Department reports that at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20th, a woman in her 80s was fatally shot in what appears to have been a carjacking.
The Seattle Times reports that the woman in question is Ruth Dalton, who owns Granny’s Critter Care. Reports from nearby residents indicate that the tragic carjacking took place in the Madison Valley area, close to Lake Washington, at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and East Harrison Street, which is located one block away from East Madison Street.
The alleged murderer has not been apprehended as of Wednesday morning. Reports indicate that a few hours following the murder, Dalton’s stolen vehicle was located, and one of the dogs under Dalton’s care was discovered dead in a garbage can close to the recovered vehicle.
This senseless crime victimizing an 80-year-old woman, according to KVI’s John Carlson, is evidence that “Seattle hits bottom” after the murder of Dalton by a suspected carjacker. It gets worse: according to the Seattle Police, one of the dogs the woman was caring for was discovered dead at a different location from Dalton’s body. The killing of Dalton “goes part and parcel for the kind of anarchy we have in Seattle now,” according to a neighbor who spoke to KOMO News and lived near the scene of the tragic carjacking.
Further, Carlson wonders if Seattle is still shocked, aghast, and compelled to frantic action due to the city’s persistent crime problems. This instance, though, ought to be enough.
“It’s again just an awful, awful story,” Carlson says, adding that the murder of Dalton ought to make Seattleites and their representatives think deeply about police personnel and public safety. But the thing I’ve been saying on the Commute for the past few years is that crime… has become more sporadic and brutal.
