The Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site will open its doors on Saturday, Dec. 13, offering a seasonal experience that blends history, community and 19th-century charm.
A Historic Building Lit by More Than 150 Candles
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced that the free public tours will run from 5 to 7 p.m., inviting visitors to explore the early-statehood landmark illuminated by over 150 hand-placed candles.
“Decorations throughout the building will reflect 19th-century holiday traditions,” the agency shared, noting that guests will experience how early Illinois lawmakers may have marked the season.
The Statehouse, located at 315 W. Gallatin St., served as Illinois’ capitol from 1836 to 1839. During these formative years, the building hosted legislators — including a young Abraham Lincoln — before the government relocated to Springfield. Today, it stands as an enduring reminder of the state’s frontier past.
Special Activities and Community Giving
As part of the event, the first 100 visitors will receive a free commemorative ornament, a tradition that draws early crowds each year. In keeping with the season, the site will also be accepting non-perishable and canned food donations to support the local food pantry.
Guests are encouraged to take their time walking through the historic rooms, where period-appropriate decorations, natural greenery, and candlelight recreate the warmth of an 1830s holiday gathering.

Regular hours at the Vandalia Statehouse are Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but the candlelight evening is one of the site’s most popular seasonal programs.
