The 18-year-old Columbus drowning victim who was rescued from the Atlantic Ocean on an Outer Banks island in North Carolina has been identified.

Ibrahim Salam Sankoh, along with two other people, was swimming close to the Gull Street Public Beach Access point on the South Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head, North Carolina, as reported by the City of Nags Head.

At 2:51 p.m. on July 3, officers responded to reports of three swimmers in trouble. With the help of a lifeguard, one of the swimmers, who accounted for two, successfully returned to the shore. At that moment, the third swimmer was not visible.

Before aerial assistance could be dispatched, a Nags Head police officer used a drone to locate the third swimmer, Sankoh. A lifeguard rescued Sankoh and took him ashore, where he was transferred to a hospital. He was declared dead when they arrived, even after medical attention.

The reason why the swimmers required assistance has not been disclosed by the police. For medical attention and assessment, the other two swimmers were brought to a hospital.
