Weekend in D.C.: Holiday Market and Other Top Things to Do Through Nov. 23

Washington, D.C. — As the final weekend before Thanksgiving arrives, the District is shifting into full holiday mode with festive markets, seasonal light displays, concerts and family-friendly events happening across the region.

Whether you’re entertaining out-of-town guests or carving out time for yourself, the city and its neighboring suburbs are offering a packed schedule of ways to welcome the season.

Downtown Holiday Market Returns

Running from Nov. 21 to Dec. 23, the annual Downtown Holiday Market transforms F Street NW between 7th and 9th streets into a lively corridor of local artisans, gift vendors and food stalls. Entry is free, and visitors can explore dozens of rotating sellers offering art, jewelry, home goods and handmade items.

Situated just outside the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, the market makes it easy to pair holiday shopping with a cultural visit.

ZooLights Reopens After Shutdown

One of D.C.’s most beloved holiday traditions, ZooLights at the National Zoo, has returned and is open Friday through Sunday through Jan. 3. Tickets cost $9, and organizers confirmed that the event remained on schedule despite recent government closures.

The zoo features one million LED lights, over 100 illuminated animal lanterns and walk-through scenes ranging from deserts to rainforests.

“Our team has been working around the clock to make ZooLights happen,” said Nikki Mounts, the zoo’s Director of Business Operations.

Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance due to high demand.

Umbrella Art Fair Brings Over 100 Artists

The Umbrella Art Fair, held at The Square at International Square on 1850 K Street NW, runs Friday through Sunday and remains free to attend. The event spans 35,000 square feet, showcasing work from more than 100 artists, including local favorites such as Autumn Spears, Rose Jaffe and Tracie Ching.

The fair is open 6–10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Full event details can be found on the organizer’s site.

Washington Harbour Ice Rink Opens

One of the most scenic skating spots in the region, the Washington Harbour Ice Rink at the Georgetown waterfront, is now open for the winter season. Admission ranges from $9 to $11 with $7 skate rentals.

Open daily and even on Thanksgiving and Christmas, the rink provides extended hours during winter break. Families can also explore nearby dining and waterfront activities.

Maryland: Holiday Lights and Community Sharing

Montgomery County hosts LuminoCity’s Wonder Journey, a holiday lights festival covering 12 acres at the county fairgrounds, running through Jan. 1. Ticket prices range from $33.47 for children to $40.23 for adults.

Visitors can explore whimsical themed zones, ride the holiday train, walk among life-sized dinosaurs, or dance on an illuminated floor.

In Boyds, the Holiday Share Fair invites families to donate or pick up free winter gear and household items. Organizers describe it as a community swap designed to support residents ahead of the holidays.

Biking Through the Festival of Lights

In Upper Marlboro, the popular Festival of Lights becomes a unique biking experience on Sunday. The event, typically drive-through, opens a special Bikes and Lights evening for $5 per rider. The illuminated trail winds through animated displays packed with thousands of bulbs.

Virginia: Tree Lighting, Cider and Celebrations

In Old Town Alexandria, the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Market Square near City Hall. The lighting is expected shortly after 6:40 p.m., followed by musical performances and a festive arrival by Santa on the King Street Trolley.

At the Lloyd House, the annual Alexandria Cider Festival invites guests to sample regional ciders, enjoy live music and participate in historic tavern games. Tickets cost $55, or $25 for designated drivers.
