MJP –
After a terrible lawnmower accident at a daycare in Quincy, Washington, earlier this summer, two-year-old Mateo Pacheco Elliott is still hospitalized in Seattle. Mateo was at the daycare on June 24 when something happened: his foot was amputated.
His loved ones have been keeping a GoFundMe page updated with news on his progress toward recovery ever since. Stacey Elliott, Mateo’s mother, has been there for her kid through thick and thin. The fundraiser’s creator, Angela Axelson, is a close friend of the family and is doing all in her can to help them through this difficult time.
The fact that both parents are currently unemployed only adds to their difficulties. “I hope I can be of assistance to them in any way I can,” Axelson stated. Mateo’s mom and I have been friends for the better part of a decade. The fact that Stacey Elliott witnessed her childhood friend suffer a terrible injury has further deepened her grief, she told NCW Life.
As per Axelson’s account, the accident occurred when the daycare owner was using the riding lawn mower. The owner was the person that two-year-old Mateo wanted to talk to. While sprinting towards the lawn mower, he lost his footing and fell.
His leg was amputated after he went under, Axelson explained. The updates on Mateo’s fundraising revealed that he had a significant ankle, knee, and thigh injury in addition to having his foot amputated.
There was insufficient evidence to press charges, according to the Quincy Police Department’s investigation. The DCYF is still looking into the incident, but in the meantime, they suspended the daycare’s license.
“Sure, accidents do happen, but when you pay someone to watch your kids, you should have faith that they’ll be careful not to hurt them badly,” Axelson stated. As Mateo and his family strive to get back to normal, she asks the community to keep praying for them.
During this tragic ordeal, the family is contemplating legal action in their pursuit of justice and the prevention of other families having to go through what they have.
