Aptos, CA – Authorities in Santa Cruz County are investigating the disappearance of 35-year-old Danielle Staley, a Utah woman who vanished nearly a week ago after visiting Rio Del Mar State Beach in California. Officials say new details suggest that foul play may be involved.
Last Seen Near Rio Del Mar State Beach
According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Staley was last seen around 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 at Rio Del Mar State Beach, located roughly 10 miles east of Santa Cruz. She was reportedly with a group of people at the time.
In an updated release issued Nov. 9, the department stated:
“New information indicates she may be at risk, and foul play may be involved.”
Belongings Found, But No Sign of Her
As reported by SFGATE, investigators said Staley had arrived on California’s Central Coast near the end of October with a friend and was staying in a camper van near the beach. Her personal belongings were found along the shoreline, but there has been no trace of her since.
Authorities have conducted multiple drone searches along the coast to look for signs of Staley, though they say there is no indication she entered the water the night she disappeared.
Family Concerned, Investigation Ongoing
Family members in Utah told investigators that not hearing from Staley is extremely unusual, raising further concern about her safety.
“At this time, investigators are not ruling out foul play; however, the case is being treated as a missing person at risk due to the circumstances,” Sgt. Zach West of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office told SFGATE, adding that individuals connected to Staley have been cooperating with the investigation.
