Two killed in US-23 crash near Brighton

Two people are dead following a multi-vehicle crash Monday night on US-23 near Brighton.

Green Oak Township Fire Chief Kevin Gentry tells GIGO News that they were called out to a crossover crash on US-23, south of Lee Road, at 9:28 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a semi tractor-trailer heading northbound lost control and struck a southbound tractor trailer head on.

According to a press release from the Green Oak Township Police Department, that caused subsequent crashes involving the original tractor trailer, a pickup truck that caught fire, and a full-sized SUV whom all appear to have been traveling southbound.

The driver of the pickup truck was ejected from the vehicle and succumbed to his injuries on-scene, as did the lone driver of the tractor trailer that was headed southbound.

The SUV was occupied by two teens who were both shaken but with no apparent injuries.  The driver of the original tractor trailer was transported to Providence Park Hospital in Novi with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Both northbound and southbound US23, as well as Whitmore Lake Road were closed for several hours during the investigation.

Green Oak Police were assisted on scene by the Green Oak Township Fire Department, Livingston County Ambulance, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Metro Parks Police Authority, Livingston County Central Dispatch, Hamburg Township Police, Brighton Police Department, Livingston County Major Crash Team, and Michigan Department of Transportation.

Factors that caused the crash are still being investigated by the Livingston County Accident Investigation Team and the Green Oak Township Police. However, Chief Gentry said there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.
