The huge mall retailer is attempting to remain ahead of the curve by making nationwide reforms, and as a result, 150 more stores are closing.
Macy’s has been ahead of the curve when it comes to evolving customer tastes and preferences, and that includes updating the products it sells.
At Macy’s second-quarter results call, CEO Tony Spring said that the company has rethought its marketing and assortment strategy to strike a better balance between affordability and style.
Focusing on strong product sectors and lowering inventory in categories with weaker demand, the company improved discounts and targeted tailored messaging.
Customer behavior shifted toward more prudence as the quarter went on, according to Spring. This shift was probably caused by the complex news cycles and persistent economic anxiety.
Despite somewhat lower-than-expected revenues of $4.9 billion in the second quarter, adjusted earnings per share of $0.53 were higher than market estimates.
So, it seems like Macy’s is making an effort to manage its product lines in a way that meets client demand.

By pulling out of unprofitable markets, Macy’s hopes to further streamline its operations.
The establishments have been divided into “go forward” and “non-go forward” categories by the corporation, which is still purchasing goods for the former.
This fall, Macy’s intends to conduct staffing tests for women’s shoes and handbags in approximately 100 go-forward stores. The goal is to better target their initiatives.
However, the 150 locations that are not considered go-forward will be closed at some point, but only if the corporation can receive advantageous sales for those assets.
Spring found that go-forward stores had 500 basis points better sales and 950 basis points higher adjusted EBITDA than non-go-forward stores.
According to TheStreet, the 150 non-go-forward locations will be closed gradually, but unfortunately, it is inevitable.
Despite the lack of information regarding the remaining closures, Macy’s now anticipates closing around 55 shops this year, up from earlier projections of about 50.
