MJP –
If you’re not a fan of rats, get ready because we’re quite sure this is a list no one will boast about making.
As a result of severe rat problems, three Michigan cities were included in Orkin’s yearly list of the 50 Most Rat-Infested Cities, with one city even making it into the Top 10.
The millions of households that battle with rodent infestations every fall have a legitimate concern, as pointed out by Orkin. When the temperature drops, rodents start looking for places to stay warm and feed.
This year’s ranking was compiled by Orkin using data collected from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024, which tracked new residential rodent treatments. Orkin will have a better idea of the likelihood that households in each city will have a rodent problem (which can transmit disease and cause catastrophic damage) based on that date.
“Rodents can cause a lot of structural problems for property owners,” remarks John Kane, Orkin National Accounts Entomologist & Quality Manager.
They are so resilient that they can eat through walls and squeeze into tight spaces around pipes. There is a higher risk of fires caused by these small intruders because they gnaw on wiring.

When it came to rat infestations, how did Michigan’s communities fare? Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Flint all appeared on the list this year, with the letter ‘D’ even into the notorious Top Ten. This was the appearance of the Michigan rankings;

Increasing one rank from last year, #8 Detroit
2 spots lower than last year, Grand Rapids drops to #27.
*Flint moved up one rank from previous year to #42
When it comes to the top rank, Chicago has maintained its title for the past decade. In light of Chicago’s continued dominance, Orkin decided to make lemonade out of lemons. If it helps, they have been at the top since Orkin began publishing the list every year.
