Tied Hartland school board race will be recounted

A recount of votes will take place for a seat on the Hartland Consolidated Schools Board of Education.

Candidate Greg Keller requested the recount after he and incumbent Michelle Hemeyer both received 5,264 votes on Nov. 8. After the Livingston County Board of Canvassers confirmed the tie, a tiebreaker drawing was held in accordance with state election law in which Hemeyer drew a piece of paper that said “elected,” meaning she would take the seat.

However, rather than accept that outcome, Keller asked for a recount, a request that came before the Board of Canvassers on Tuesday.

Although Hemeyer filed an objection to Keller’s petition, citing the cost to the district, the four members of the board voted unanimously to conduct a recount.

The Hartland school district will have to reimburse the county for the cost of the recount, which Hemeyer said could be between $10,000 to $15,000.

The recount could begin as soon as Friday at the Livingston County EMS Headquarters on Tooley Road, and could take up to two days.

Members of the public can attend, although they will be required to watch from a distance and remain quiet throughout the proceeding.
