Theis named as Michigan Senate’s Assistant Minority Floor Leader

State Senator Lana Theis (R-Brighton) will be getting a promotion from within her party in the upcoming legislative session, while voters effectively have given her a demotion.

Despite Theis easily winning reelection to represent the 22nd District for another four-year term on Nov. 8, her party was dethroned from nearly four decades of power after Michigan Democrats won a majority in the upper chamber for the first time  since 1984. Democrats also won leadership in the state House, which they last enjoyed in 2010.

As a result, Theis will lose her leadership role as Chair of both the Insurance and Banking, and Senate Education and Career Readiness committees.

However, within the GOP caucus, Theis has been named as assistant minority floor leader, technically an intra-party promotion from her current position as assistant president pro tempore.

That announcement came from Sen. Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton), who will be Senate minority leader in the coming term.
