Texas is one of the states where more than a quarter of its workforce earns low salaries. According to a recent report by Oxfam America, 4,528,976 workers in Texas, which represents 29.9% of the workforce, earn a wage lower than $17 per hour.

According to Oxfam, a wage of $17 per hour would be advantageous for the majority of employees who currently earn the federal minimum wage or just slightly above it.
According to the report, some states have proactively decided to boost the minimum wage without relying on the federal government to do so. According to Oxfam, not a single worker reaped the rewards of the rise in the state minimum wage in 2024.

The figures become even more impressive when they are analyzed according to different demographic categories such as ethnicity and sex.
According to the report, a greater percentage of women in the workforce, specifically 36.1%, are earning low salaries compared to men, with only 24.8% of them facing the same situation. The percentages soar even more for women of color, with 43.8% still earning low wages, closely followed by 37.6% of Black women.
According to the report, this situation not only damages our economy but also exacerbates inequality. Black and Latina women, along with individuals from diverse backgrounds, are overrepresented in the low-wage sector, leading to a higher probability of being ensnared in poverty.
Oxfam also categorizes it based on race and ethnicity. Individuals of Hispanic and Latinx descent represent the group with the largest percentage of employees earning less than $17 per hour, standing at 40.3%.In Texas, 36.7% of individuals from communities of color, including Hispanic individuals, are earning low wages, while 34.2% of Black individuals are also in this category.
