Tehachapi Boosts Local Economy With Major RV Park, Gas Station, and Storage Developments

The city of Tehachapi is seeing progress on several commercial development projects, including two visitor-serving ventures that have recently broken ground.

One significant project is the Tehachapi Storage and RV Park, located between Dennison Road and Bailey Court on East Tehachapi Boulevard.

Construction on this site is underway, with plans for 449 storage units, 70 covered RV storage spaces, 220 uncovered RV storage spaces, and 16,000 square feet designated for vehicle storage.

The first phase of the development will focus on the storage aspect, while the second phase will add 91 RV camping spaces, with lengths ranging from 45 to 100 feet and including water, sewer, and electrical hookups.

Amenities at the RV park will include restrooms, a 3,000-square-foot clubhouse, a laundry room, a tennis/pickleball court, a horseshoe pit, and dog runs for travelers. A condition of approval for the project limits stays to fewer than 30 days.

The development is expected to meet the increasing demand from RV travelers visiting Tehachapi.

According to an economic update from Assistant City Manager Corey Costelloe, some of the other projects faced delays.

“A few of these projects were approved in 2022 but needed additional time to sort out construction and review prior to breaking ground,” Costelloe told Tehachapi News.

One such project is a gas, retail, and quick-service restaurant complex at 860 Magellan Drive in Capital Hills. The development includes a 10-pump gas station, a convenience store, and a 2,000-square-foot restaurant space with a drive-thru.

Costelloe noted that the property owners have secured a fuel brand, though as of late October, the operator for the drive-thru remained under negotiation.

“It could be a new brand, or a second location of another brand already in the market to take advantage of the 4 million cars that traverse Highway 58 per year,” he noted.

Other notable projects in Tehachapi include Mountain Top Storage, located at 795 W. Tehachapi Blvd., which is nearing completion. This facility will offer over 73,000 square feet of storage space, including climate-controlled units, with plans to add storage for RVs and vehicles.
