Teaching, according to some, is all about love. But devotion alone won’t keep educators at their jobs.
More than 50% of Texas educators are contemplating quitting their positions by the conclusion of the 2023–2024 academic year, according to the Texas State Teachers Association.
As part of a study conducted in partnership with Sam Houston State University, the association polled 840 members who are educators of the organization. An organization news release stated that the survey revealed that 65 percent of educators pondered quitting their jobs in the spring of 2017.

For what reasons are educators quitting the field?
Teachers are leaving for a variety of reasons. Teachers in Texas expressed dissatisfaction with public school funding, safety concerns, and salary disparity, according to an anonymous study.
The study shows that teachers’ needs aren’t being satisfied, says TSTA president Ovidia Molina.
Because the instructors’ replies were anonymous, Molina claimed, “I don’t know how many of these teachers actually quit or retired early.”.
“However, I am concerned that a significant number of them have already departed from the classroom or will do so soon unless our state leaders cease their political attacks on schools and begin to back public education and educators.”

Salary ranges for Texas teachers can go as high as $86,600. While educators in Austin might make about $55,000 per year, their Houston counterparts can anticipate a median income of $60,000. These wage numbers show how different positions and areas of the state pay teachers differently.
Here is the average pay ranging from 0 to 20 years of experience, based on a 10-month contract, according to the Texas Education Agency. Not included: signing bonus.

But when the 88th Texas legislature adjourned on May 29, 2023, HB 1548 died.

- While spending the same amount of time outside of class on school-related tasks, teachers typically work a second job for an average of 13.5 hours each week.
- The majority of instructors (74%) felt that having a second job detracted from their teaching, but they still felt the need for the extra money.
- Yearly, educators shelled out $856 for classroom materials and $405 for health insurance premiums.
