Social Security January Payment Schedule: What’s Changing in 2024?

Social Security January Payment Schedule: What’s Changing in 2024?

Social Security payments for January will start arriving on January 3rd and continue until the 31st. When you receive, your payment depends on your birthday and the type of benefits you receive. Let’s take a closer look at how the schedule works.

How Social Security Payments Work

The Social Security Administration (SSA) sends monthly benefits based on the day of your birthday. If you filed your claim after May 1, 1997, you’ll get your payment on one of the Wednesdays of the month – either the second, third, or fourth Wednesday, depending on your birth date. However, if you applied for benefits before May 1997, you have a specific payment date.

Those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive their benefits on the 1st of the month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, payments will be sent the day before. So, for January 2025, the SSI payment will be made on December 31st since January 1st is a holiday.

Social Security Payment Increase in 2025

Good news for seniors! There will be a small increase in monthly Social Security checks this year. The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2025 is 2.5%, which adds nearly $50 to the average monthly benefit of $1,900. While this is slightly lower than the 3.2% COLA increase from 2024, it is still consistent with the average 2.6% increase over the past 20 years.

Here’s a breakdown of when you can expect to receive your Social Security payment in January 2025:
