A new city program may allow some New Yorkers who are on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to receive an extra $500 monthly.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams launched the “Money in Your Pockets” campaign on Monday to raise awareness of the city’s many programs that help people. The program will reach 20 different communities, aiming to educate folks in places where they may not know they may obtain these advantages.
As an example of his empathy for the plight of his fellow New Yorkers, Mayor Adams recalled how his mother, a single parent, had to hold down many jobs to provide for their family. “Growing up, I was one of three children raised by a single mother who worked multiple jobs just to make ends meet. You could feel the hustle.
Far too many New Yorkers still believe the odds are stacked against them, and regrettably, many are still engaging in the same behavior today. But that won’t happen under our government; we’re protecting New Yorkers and trying to lower housing costs.
Today, we are introducing our ‘Money in Your Pockets’ campaign to assist working families in New York in determining their eligibility for benefits and to expand upon the billions of dollars that we have already helped distribute. Everyone in New York deserves a piece of the city’s success, and we’re going to make sure they get it by creating an inclusive and prosperous metropolis.
Projects that enhance SNAP
The city provides extra services to its SNAP-eligible households, such as a monthly food budget of up to $270 for delivery or pickup of SNAP-eligible items. Additionally, all fresh fruits and vegetables are 50% down, which may save participants an additional $30 per month.
Members of Health + Hospitals NYC Care who live in New York City are eligible to use the Groceries to Go service. New Yorkers can obtain a dollar-for-dollar match on some produce items like beans, fruits, and vegetables through another program called Obtain the Good Stuff.
Members can earn a dollar extra on their “Get the Good Stuff” loyalty card for every dollar spent on eligible SNAP items, up to a daily maximum of $10. Over $1 million has been redeemed by New Yorkers through this scheme, according to the Adams administration.
The city estimates that citizens have saved almost $30 billion across all programs and services provided, demonstrating the tremendous impact of these measures. But even with this, many people don’t know about all the benefits that are available to them; that’s why the “Money in Your Pockets” program is starting in the city’s poorest areas.

The Chief Advisor to the Mayor, Ingrid P. Lewis-Martin, stressed that the government should cater to the people’s needs. “When our elected or appointed officials are acting in the best interest of the people we were elected or appointed to serve, we see government at its finest.”To that end, the “Money in Your Pocket” program is working to guarantee that all eligible New Yorkers get the benefits and services to which they are legally due.
Furthermore, it allows the Adams administration to construct a New York City that is both more inexpensive and more fair.
More programs for the people of New York
In addition to food stamps, the city provides several other initiatives to help its citizens who are struggling financially. Housing aid, subsidies for child care, and the Big Apple Connect program—funded by a $153 million pot—make high-speed internet and basic television services available to people living in public housing for free.
Around half a million New Yorkers will reap the benefits of $1.9 billion in child care vouchers, $1.8 billion in medical debt relief, and free tax preparation all year round.
With 1.71 million New York City residents relying on SNAP benefits in 2022, it is evident that these services are needed. The goal of the Adams administration’s programs like “Money in Your Pockets” is to make sure that more people in New York have access to the tools they need to survive and prosper in this city that is getting more and more costly.
