Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing) called for “smart, bipartisan solutions to the crisis at the southern border” during a Wednesday morning press conference on the importance of supporting our border agents and their mental health needs.
Slotkin was joined by Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of other members, as well as National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd.
Slotkin highlighted the mental strain of working in law enforcement, especially for those who patrol the nation’s borders. She said with suicide among border personnel on the rise, it’s crucial that they get to the specialized treatment & resources they need to maintain their mental health.
“I reject the false choice between humane immigration policies & maintaining a secure border,” said Slotkin. “We can have and need both. Rep. Gonzales and I have introduced three bipartisan border security bills together this year alone.”
Slotkin that when it comes to fixing the nation’s broken immigration system, she’ll work with anyone from either party willing to come up with real solutions.
“We owe our constituents nothing less,” she said.
