A 14-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in Newburgh, New York, last Friday night. Police say the shooting happened around 8:30 p.m.
on South Street, right outside The Living in Jesus Ministry and near two other churches. Investigators are still trying to figure out whether the girl was deliberately shot or if the shooting was an accident.
Local residents were shocked by the violence, especially because they thought the area was safer than before. Soraya Rosario, a longtime resident of Newburgh, said,
“It’s no good, but I’m telling you, last year was worse.” Sharay Garcia, who moved to Newburgh last year, expressed her surprise, saying, “It’s a little noisy on the block but as far as the violence, I’m astonished. I can’t believe that happened.”
First responders quickly arrived at the scene to help the injured teen. They worked hard to save her life before rushing her to St. Luke’s Hospital.
She is now fighting for her life and remains in critical condition. Authorities have not made any arrests yet, and the investigation is ongoing.
“I hope she pulls through,” said Rosario, who added that her thoughts and prayers are with the girl’s family.
