TANGIPAOHA PARISH, Louisiana (MJP) –
A former employee of Tangipahoa Parish was apprehended in 2021 for allegedly bringing an inmate home to purchase guns from them, as reported by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.
On Friday, Donald Hammons, 56, was taken into custody on one count of Malfeasance in Office.
In 2021, the sheriff’s office reported that they learned that Hammons “had taken a trustee inmate from the jail back to the inmate’s home to buy weapons from the inmate,” according to the statement.
The next step was to summon Hammons for questioning. According to the authorities, he willingly “surrendered the weapons involved” and confessed to the accusation.
Before a change in administration in July of this year, Hammons had been working as a maintenance worker at the parish jail since 2010. The sheriff’s office finally fired him.

“Security has been our top challenge at the jail, and therefore our top priority,” Sheriff Gerald Sticker stated.
“In those efforts to improve security, we have made personnel changes, increased training and certifications, and instituted changes in general access by parish employees,” he said.
