On the heels of Safeway’s May closure, Supervisor Aaron Peskin has announced that the Northpoint Shopping Center in San Francisco will be welcoming a Grocery Outlet shop, breathing fresh life into the space.
Following Safeway’s departure, people have been concerned about the lack of affordable, easily accessible grocery stores in the area, therefore this move is anticipated to address that concern.
“The departure of Safeway has been a hardship for many people in this community who have had to go outside the neighborhood to find reasonably priced groceries and household essentials, like baby formula, detergent, and diapers,” Peskin stated, as reported by KRON4, adding that many residents have felt the pinch of having to travel for daily necessities.
If this problem can be resolved, the new 30,000-square-foot building will greatly benefit the local economy and job market.

Months of discussions ensued, with Peskin’s office informing that the decision was reached after Peskin’s focus was on acquiring another grocery store to occupy the space at Northpoint Shopping Center.
Mike Zwiefelhofer, president of the North Beach business association, welcomed Grocery Outlet and praised their community engagement, adding to the community’s emotions, according to KRON4.
As reported by SFGate, Anchor Pacific Capital, a San Jose-based firm, paid $25.76 million to acquire NorthPoint Centre and the neighboring NorthPoint Vistas apartments, filling a large void left by Safeway’s closure. “Our goal right now is to try and stabilize the center, to try to land another supermarket to activate the center for the neighborhood and Fisherman’s Wharf,” said Anton Qiu, managing partner of Anchor Pacific Capital, per the publication.
In addition, Supervisor Aaron Peskin noted the significance of the new addition, saying, “It’s been months of negotiations to help bring all the parties together to address any concerns, but I’m proud to have helped secure the 3rd grocery store for my district this term.”
