Salem Township landfill draws state violation notice over methane levels

A Washtenaw County landfill has been cited by state environmental regulators with repeatedly exceeding methane emissions standards and failing to correct the issue.

According to a violation notice issued October 13 by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), air monitors at the Arbor Hills Landfill in Salem Township noted methane above an “action level” on 34 separate occasions between June 10 and Sept. 20.

A consent judgement signed in March requires the landfill owners, Green for Life Environmental (GFL), to locate and fix the issue within 48 hours. However, the notice says they have failed to do that.

Company officials told MLive they’re preparing a formal response to the violation.
