Ringing High Bell! US Popular Grocery Chain Announces Surprising Closures Across 400 Locations

MJP –

The abrupt and earlier-than-expected closures of 400 stores across the Northeast have been announced by a grocery chain.

Among the 32 Northeastern stores that will be shuttering their doors is the Stop & Shop in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. The chain, which has more than 400 locations, has made the announcement.

As of September 9, 2024, the store will no longer be open, according to TAPinto.

The closing date was repeatedly pushed back, first to September 9 and later to October 23 from its original early November timetable.

Food and other supplies were running low, according to the store manager.

Stop & Shop announced in July that it would be closing underperforming shops by year’s end.

Despite these layoffs, the firm promised that its 350+ locations in the affected five-state area would continue to serve customers well.

The decision to eliminate some locations was part of a strategic study to assure future growth, according to Gordon Reid, President of Stop & Shop. Reid also highlighted the company’s commitment to feeding its communities.

Additionally, he promised that all employees would remain valued members of the Stop & Shop family, employed at other neighboring stores.

The Phillipsburg store is one of ten in the Garden State that will be shuttering its doors, joining those in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York.

Residents of Phillipsburg have taken to social media in response to the announcement, voicing both their disappointment and their anxiety about the loss of grocery stores in the area.

People have been complaining about the store’s bare shelves since August. One customer even went so far as to say that they went to get pain medication but couldn’t find any.

Another said that, due to the quick loss of inventory, the store would close even earlier than anticipated.
