Reds' Pitching Problems Latest Injury Leaves Projected Opening Day Rotation Unavailable

Cincinnati — It is not even September yet, yet not a single pitcher from the Cincinnati Reds’ projected Opening Day rotation for 2024 is currently on the active roster. That is just one more reason the squad hasn’t been in postseason contention this year.

As the Reds started the season, they had a promising right-handed and left-handed tandem in Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo.

Frankie Montas, a free agent signee, started the game on opening day, and the other two starters, Graham Ashcraft and Andrew Abbott, were both returning.

After a left middle finger sprain that occurred on Saturday, Cincinnati put Lodolo on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. Lodolo has given up 38 runs in nine starts over 45 and 1/3 innings after coming off the injured list while battling a blister on his left index finger.

Last Friday, Abbott had a left shoulder pain, which kept him out of action. On August 17, Greene was listed as injured due to discomfort in his right elbow.

An MRI revealed inflammation, but there was no damage to his UCL. With a strained right elbow, Ashcraft is now on the 60-day injured list. Just before the MLB trade deadline, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired Montas in a trade.

Nick Martinez, a veteran swingman who was signed this summer, has 36 total appearances and 10 starts.

To fill Lodolo’s roster position, the club summoned right-hander Casey Legumina.

Additionally, left-hander Brandon Williamson was sent to Triple-A Louisville for a rehabilitation assignment, despite being anticipated to compete for a spot in that rotation. Because of a left shoulder issue, he has missed the entire MLB season.

In addition to recalling outfielder Rece Hinds from AAA-Louisville, the Reds added outfielder Stuart Fairchild to the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Monday due to a strained left thumb.
