A portion of US-23 in Livingston County was closed following what authorities believe was a natural gas pipeline explosion.
Consumers Energy crews, police and firefighters were called to the area around US-23 in Tyrone Township Wednesday morning.
The Jackson-based utility said it may have been a break on a transmission line. State police said the explosion sent “debris everywhere.”
No injuries have been reported.
The Associated Press reports that golf pro Dennis Hussey was at the Tyrone Hills Golf Club when he heard explosions and the windows started shaking.
“I looked out the window,” he said. “I thought there was a big semi-truck that blew or something. Then, I looked out the window, the north window, and (saw) just a huge plume of brown smoke just billowing quite a bit.”
Hussey said he later heard a second “boom”.
The freeway has since reopened and the shelter in place alert has been rescinded.
