Pacific Northwest Hit by Atmospheric River Coastal Winds and Thunderstorms, Clearing Expected by Weekend

Portland, Oregon — Strong south winds that pounded the coast today have subsided, but gusty conditions continue to threaten coastal Oregon and Washington state. As the afternoon proceeds, thunderstorms are anticipated to emerge, bringing scattered showers and the possibility of brief, unpredictable wind gusts up to 55 mph. Inland, gusts of up to 30 mph are expected, with tree damage and isolated power outages being a worry.

Thunderstorms may produce heavy downpours, tiny hail, and waterspouts along the coast, causing localized wind damage if they advance inland. While winds will lessen overnight, colder and showery weather is expected through Thursday. A brief dry spell is forecast for late Friday and Saturday morning, followed by further rain during the weekend. Next week’s forecast predicts drier conditions as offshore winds develop.
