Ohio legalized recreational marijuana use, and sales allegedly topped $11 million in the state’s first five days of sales.

The goods can be purchased by Kentuckians in Ohio, but not everyone is allowed to carry marijuana back into the Commonwealth.

“People need to understand that our program at this point is just medicinal and you can’t get around that by going to another state and bringing it back here,” stated the governor.

To alleviate their severe medical ailments, some Kentuckians were able to lawfully own and consume tiny amounts of medical cannabis in 2022, thanks to an executive order signed by Beshear.

Beginning January 1, 2023, the Governor laid forth the requirements that Kentuckians suffering from one of twenty-one medical conditions—including cancer, MS, PTSD, muscular dystrophy, or a terminal illness— must fulfill to have access to medicinal cannabis. Among these conditions are:

  • You can’t get your hands on cannabis outside of a state that has legalized and regulated its sale in the US. Kentuckians need to save their receipt.
  • Eight ounces is the threshold in Kentucky between a misdemeanor and a felony, hence no individual may buy or possess more than that.
  • A medical professional’s certification indicating a diagnosis of one of twenty-one qualifying illnesses is also required of all Kentuckians. You are required to keep a copy of the certification.
  • It is allowed to import marijuana into Kentucky for anyone who matches the requirements.

“Our program for medical marijuana is crystal clear. According to Beshear, a straightforward checklist outlining the requirements for holding what is allegedly medicinal marijuana has been developed through collaboration with both the legislature and police enforcement. It is now against the law to purchase recreational marijuana in Ohio and transport it to Kentucky. Make note of that. This is simply the way the law is.
