Columbus, Ohio –
Following allegations of abuse and neglect, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction settled with the family of a man whose death occurred while confined there.
The family of Dewey McVay Jr. will get $225,000 to settle charges against the ODRC for assault and neglect, according to the law firm Friedman, Gilbert, and Gerhardstein (FG+G).
The law company added that the McVay estate had filed the action in April 2022 to explore the circumstances surrounding his death, which was allegedly caused by the care he received from jail officials and medical personnel.
According to FG+G, McVay was incarcerated at an Orient state facility in December 2019. Reportedly, McVay showed resistance during a prison transfer that took place on December 2. Even though McVay was handcuffed, the legal team claimed that prison guards broke into his cell and attacked him.

The law firm’s press statement claimed that the officers and bystanders who saw what happened reported inaccurate information on the cause of McVay’s injuries.
Medical personnel allegedly failed to obtain correct injury details and forwent a CT scan that would have helped diagnose a brain injury.
Unresponsive in his cell, McVay was discovered two weeks subsequently. As a result of blunt force injuries, he was declared dead on December 20.
