A new bill that would significantly alter the current policy on homework in California’s public schools is getting close to being approved. The Healthy Homework Act has been approved by both houses of the state legislature and is now waiting to be signed by the governor.
Its stated goal is the alleviation of homework-related stress for both pupils and their parents. According to Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo, the bill’s author, she was moved to action after a discussion with her young daughter, who inquired whether she might “ban homework.”
According to Schiavo, a lot of parents are on board with the plan since they’re sick of not spending enough time with their children. The most prominent of these possible diversions were extensive assignments and extracurricular activities.
The argument put out by those who favor the present amount of homework is that it prepares students for future success. Proponents of the new law say it will put an undue strain on families and harm mental health.
To allay these fears, the measure urges educators to think twice before giving out assignments that could necessitate help from parents or access to technology that some pupils may lack.
Legislators are being urged to approve the measure by the Administrators Association of San Diego City Schools, a union that represents management staff.
