Fourteen local volunteers were recognized in New City on Wednesday night for locating a missing child last month.
Tzion Maron, 8, was on vacation with his family in Arizona when he went missing. His parents were looking for him for hours before calling Chaverim of Rockland for help.
Maron’s family is originally from Rockland County but now lives in Baltimore. “When we found the child, the volunteers had tears in their eyes that we found the kid,” said volunteer Joseph Margaretten.
Within hours of receiving the call that a child was missing, volunteers boarded the plane to help. “They departed the Sullivan County Airport at 3 a.m. By 7 a.m., they had landed and by 9 a.m., had launched their search efforts,” said Aron Wieder, a Rockland County legislator.
Volunteers searched on foot and with drones for Maron, and they were able to find him within two hours. “He was dehydrated, he was suffering from the hypothermia, he was hungry,” said Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco.
Volunteers said the search for the boy was emotional for them.
