MJP –
If you’re driving on any of these 13 roads in New York State this week, beware: A speeding ticket could be automatically heading your way. There are designated work zones where drivers will face automatic fines for speeding from now until Saturday, September 21, 2024.
Under New York Vehicle & Traffic Law § 1180-E, automated speed monitoring is enforced in specific construction zones across the state. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and the Thruway Authority (NYSTA), is set to run for five years.
Watch out if you drive here in New York
The NYSTA and NYSDOT have the authority to impose fines on the registered owners of vehicles caught speeding in work zones on controlled-access highways. This means if your car is detected speeding, you will be fined regardless of who is driving.
- Automatic Fines: Speeding in designated work zones will result in automatic fines.
- Enforcement Period: The program runs through September 21, 2024.
- Responsible Party: The registered owner of the vehicle will be held financially responsible for any fines, even if someone else is driving the car.
Actually, it makes no distinction between who is behind the wheel because the speed detection system is automated. Whether it’s a family member or a friend driving your vehicle, the fine will be issued to the person whose name is on the car’s registration.
To avoid these fines, be extra vigilant when driving through work zones on the monitored roads. Adhere to the posted speed limits and ensure that anyone who drives your vehicle is aware of these regulations. By staying informed and driving responsibly, you can avoid unwanted penalties and contribute to safer road conditions for everyone.
