New Orleans Cracks Down on Homelessness with Sweep at Bywater’s Abandoned Navy Base

A homeless sweep will be held at the former Naval base in the Bywater on Thursday by the New Orleans Police Department and other community organizations.

The 7:30 a.m. sweep is scheduled to start at the Dauphine Street and Poland Avenue intersection.

Support for housing and other essential services will be provided to individuals within the building, according to NOPD.

As a result of safety and quality of life concerns, the community has been pushing for enforcement.

Several organizations and individuals will be present to lend a hand during the sweep, including the New Orleans Fire Department, New Orleans Emergency Management Services, the Louisiana Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals, Odyssey House, UNITY of Greater New Orleans, and the City of New Orleans’ Office of Homeless Services & Strategy, as reported by the NOPD.

Clearing out the homeless population from the abandoned building is nothing new.

In light of the new investigation, Officer Jeffrey Vappie is reassigned by the New Orleans Police Department.

More than one fire has broken out, and there have been numerous sweeps.
