A motorist died after his car struck a tree and gate and then caught fire in front of a home in Newark early Sunday, police said.
The crash occurred on Weequahic Avenue near Bergen Street and emergency responders arrived at the scene around 3:30 a.m., according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé.
They found a male inside the burning vehicle that had struck the tree and a gate in front of a residence, Fragé said.

Firefighters doused the flames and the motorist was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fragé.
No other injuries were reported.
