Stoves and water heaters that use natural gas would have been phased out according to regulations proposed by the Biden Administration in 2023. Consumers and businesses pushed back against the plans, so they scrapped them.

An ordinance that would have prohibited gas hookups in new buildings was found against by the city of Berkeley in California’s Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Natural gas-using buildings in Berkeley will be subject to a tax increase this year. The increased prices would make gas stoves less appealing to city dwellers.

Utah: What Are the Implications?

No such plan is presently in the works in Utah. Gas stoves are not in danger of being taxed or removed from the Beehive State, but as pointed out by the Wall Street Journal, national attention tends to follow California’s lead.

The Sunshine State usually gets paper straws and prorated electric rates while Utah gets the greatest ideas, like commuter lanes, light rail, and electric buses. However, it’s impossible to say when those might make it here.
