The membership card theft problem at Costco is getting worse as the company cracks down on non-members.
Membership cards can now be scanned at several locations by the company.
According to KTLA, the company requested that members scan either the back of their cards or their digital membership QR codes instead of simply showing them to employees while entering warehouse stores.

The nationwide rollout of the adjustment seems to have begun earlier this year. Costco stores in Huntington Beach and Inglewood, California, have reportedly installed new membership scanners.
Membership scanning machines will be installed at the entrance of your local warehouse in the coming months.
Upon arrival, all members are required to scan their membership card—whether it’s digital or physical—by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner. The warehouse chain also stated that guests need to be accompanied by a valid member to enter.
