MJP –
Two robbers stealing a 57-year-old woman of her husband’s cell phone in their Lower East Side building shot her dead. Her neighbors heard her screams before the fatal shot.
The couple’s building on Market St. near Madison St. was targeted by two masked assailants who followed Ying Zhu Liu’s husband into the elevator at approximately 11 p.m. on Monday, killing him.
When the elevator stopped on the eighth floor, where the husband and his wife lived, the criminals and the husband were engaged in a struggle.
An unidentified building resident described the incident as follows: “It was one shriek, then another shriek, and then I heard a pop.” “Then I could make out even more shouting and chaos.”
Paul, the couple’s son, Lin Rong Yan, who is 31 years old, was involved in the altercation that ensued when the husband, who was being pursued into the building, reached the eighth story, according to CCTV footage seen by the neighbor.
Paul’s dad returned home last night around eleven o’clock, according to the upstairs neighbor. He merely buzzes as he enters the front door, and two children dash up to him from behind to wait. Whether he was aware of their presence or not, they accompanied him into the building.

Paul hurried to his dad’s aid as soon as the elevator reached the eighth floor.
“Paul emerged,” the neighbor reported. Paul and his dad got into a fight with them.
According to the neighbor, the burglars were chased by a father and son who managed to drive them to the other end of the corridor, where they were escorted into a stairway. The video shows Liu sprinting down the hall toward their unit after they pass through the door. The neighbor reported that when she went through the stairway door, she passed out a few moments later.
“They run into the stairwell, and you can’t tell what’s happening, but you see the mother fleeing.” Just a few seconds after she dashes out, she collapses to the ground. A neighbor overheard her say that her skull had broken on the floor.
“She had to have seen what was happening,” he supplanted. The pop came immediately following the screaming, so that must have been them.
A police official stated that Liu passed away at the spot after one of the robbers shot him in the right cheek.
Following their altercation with the burglars, the father and son were transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Lower Manhattan to receive treatment for the injuries they sustained.
An acquaintance who spoke Mandarin reported that the father had a swollen eye after the fight and that the boy had been hit in the head with a hard item.
The acquaintance mentioned that the family emigrated from Fuzhou, China, a decade ago. The father is a former waiter, according to the friend.
“I prefer not to discuss it,” the son stated upon his father’s and his release from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s not easy. A good woman was my mom.
A man who lived in the apartment below the family praised Liu, saying that she was an excellent neighbor and a lovely, peaceful woman.
It’s so terrible for that child and husband, and I’m grateful it wasn’t me. “It’s merely tragic,” remarked 22-year-old John Lee.
Because of our near physical closeness, I feel terrible that this occurred to them. “I’m going to keep my wits about me for a while,” Lee declared.
Although police found one spent shell on the stairway, the killers escaped with the husband’s cell phone and are still at large, according to the authorities.
According to the police, one of the suspects wore a ski mask, dark trousers with a white stripe down the side, and a hoodie that was half black and half red. A black ski mask, black slacks, and black-and-white sneakers were the other person’s attire.
Based on records from the New York Police Department, this incident marks the first homicide and second gunshot in the 5th Precinct this year. There were four homicides and seven gunshots in the precinct at this time last year.
The 12-story apartment complex, which features balconies and terraces, is characterized by its quietness, according to the neighbors.
“The building and the area are safe,” commented 30-year-old Stefan He. “Up until now, I felt safe here.”
