A woman in Chicago was severely harmed on Thursday, May 30, when a man mistakenly shot her in the face, believing she was trying to break into his home, according to the police.
Authorities have stated that a 59-year-old man believed that an individual was attempting to enter his home on the 6700 block of South Prairie Avenue shortly before midnight.
A single gunshot was fired, hitting a woman on the right side of her face. The shooter was acquainted with the victim.
A woman was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in a critical state, and authorities found a weapon at the location of the incident. Area One Detectives were continuing their investigation into the incident as of Friday, according to CBS News. The identities of the man and woman involved were not disclosed.
According to data from the Chicago Police Department, a recent report highlighted the alarming number of shootings that occurred in Chicago over the weekend of May 18 to May 20. The report revealed that a total of 45 individuals were shot, tragically resulting in one fatality. These incidents took place in 31 separate shootings throughout the city.
Over the weekend leading up to the accidental shooting, authorities informed WTTW that a tragic incident resulted in the loss of nine lives due to gunfire. Additionally, a total of 41 individuals were shot in 30 different incidents.
