Major Funding Boost Nearly $1b for Internet Access Expansion in Arizona

Phoenix, AZ- Gov. Katie Hobbs has announced that the initiative to enhance broadband internet access throughout the state, particularly in underserved areas, is progressing to the next stage.

Arizona’s application for the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program has been approved, allowing for $993 million in funding to be allocated towards connecting all residents of Arizona to reliable internet service.

The BEAD program is a state grant program authorized by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with a budget of $42.45 billion. This initiative is a key component of the president’s plan to expand internet access and bring about positive changes in education, economy, healthcare, community, and workforce.

“Today’s announcement represents a critical next step that will lead to new jobs, stronger communities, and better quality of life. We are going to continue working day in and day out to ensure these funds help create a thriving Arizona for everyone,” Governor Katie Hobbs said in a press release.

The funding will help bring internet access to rural and low-income areas throughout the state. Any remaining funds after all internet connections are established can be allocated towards initiatives focused on high-speed Internet adoption, training, and workforce development.

“The reality is that broadband plays an essential role in people’s lives,” Gov. Hobbs said in a news release. “Whether it is access to education, basic healthcare services, applying for jobs, working remotely or starting a small business, internet connectivity is a necessity.”
