Longtime local teacher & coach passes away

A longtime local teacher who traveled the world with celebrities has passed away.

Charles Carlton Bates, better known as Charlie, passed away May 23rd. He was 89. Bates was an All-American athlete in high school and at the University of Michigan, which led to a career doing diving stunts as he traveled the world with celebrities, including the Three Stooges.

After his life’s first act, he became a teacher and retired as a science teacher from Hartland Farms Middle School in 1994. After retirement, Bates became an active member of the Howell American Legion and continued coaching until earlier this year.

Bates was described as a very kind, helpful and humble person, a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be missed by all.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2022 from 1-6 PM at the American Legion Devereaux Post 141 of Howell.

Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, MacDonald’s Chapel.
