Long-Jail Criminal! 14-Year Sentence Handed Down After Guilty Plea in Woman's Shooting

Columbus, Ohio –

After admitting guilt to the 2022 murder of a 19-year-old in southwest Columbus, a woman will serve at least 14 years in prison.

The Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office reports that 20-year-old Nachyla Halton entered a guilty plea this week to the first-degree felony of willful manslaughter and a three-year firearm specification. The plea is related to the gunshot death of 19-year-old Jazmine Chester, who was discovered dead on May 27, 2022, while having her well-being checked.

Chester was apprehended by police at her Wedgewood Village apartment located in the Holly Hill neighborhood on the 3700 block of Briggs Road. Her face was shot, resulting in her death.

Chester had not been contacted for eight days when the Wellness check was requested. She was last observed leaving her apartment at two in the morning on May 19 with an unidentified person who was later revealed to be Halton.

When Halton was being held on firearms charges in Cuyahoga County Jail in November, she was questioned by police. Although she admitted to knowing Chester solely by his first name, she informed the authorities that she had not been in Columbus in May.

However according to police, they were able to link Halton to the vehicle that was observed driving out of the residence, and she later ran away into the Cleveland region. After being released from Cuyahoga County Jail, she was arrested and charged with murder.

Halton admitted her guilt and was sentenced to 14–19½ years in prison by Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Bill Sperlazza. The prosecution and Halton’s defense attorney suggested the same length of time.
