A lightning strike was the cause of a house fire Wednesday in Green Oak Township.
At 4:06 p.m., the Green Oak Township Fire Department was called to a report of a house on Autumn Trail which was in fire after being struck by lightning. Chief Kevin Gentry tells GIGO News that the department did have many additional personnel on duty at the time due to the storms in the area.
“Units arrived to find a large attached garage heavily involved in fire,” he said. “GOFD, with the assistance of other fire departments, was able to contain the fire to the garage and prevent its spread into the home. The home was occupied at the time of the lightning strike but all civilians escaped without injuries.”
Gentry says one firefighter suffered minor injuries during the incident, which went to a second alarm due to the lack of fire hydrants in the area, and required tankers to shuttle water from the City of South Lyon.
Green Oak was assisted by the South Lyon, Brighton, Hamburg Township, Northfield Township, Salem Township and Ann Arbor Township fire departments.
