Work crews will have I-96 down to one lane open in each direction through the work zone between the I-275/I-696/M-5 interchange and Kent Lake Road this weekend.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) says that eastbound I-96 will have one lane open from Kent Lake Road to Wixom Road from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. All the on and off ramps will remain open.
Westbound I-96 will have one lane open from Beck Road to Kent Lake Road from 6 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday. There will be intermittent ramp closures to and from Wixom, Milford and Kent Lake roads.
After this weekend, MDOT says the following lane restrictions will be in place:
• Eastbound I-96 will have three lanes open during rush hours of 6-9 a.m. and 3-8 p.m. and two lanes open during off-peak hours of 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and 8 p.m.-6 a.m.
• Westbound I-96 will have three lanes open only during afternoon rush hours of 3-8 p.m. and two lanes open from 8-3 p.m.
This work is part of the I-96 Flex Route project that includes rebuilding the freeway, rebuilding the median shoulders for use during peak periods, sign upgrades, and active traffic management installation, including intelligent transportation systems (ITS) equipment, overhead gantry installation and ramp signals for metering traffic onto the freeway. Electronic message boards will alert drivers with speed advisories and travel information.
The work schedules are all weather dependent.
