LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. — An Indiana man and his son are facing felony charges after allegedly shooting and killing two neighborhood dogs with a bow and arrow while out deer hunting, authorities announced last week.
Shocking Discovery in a Quiet Neighborhood
Deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residential area in LaPorte on October 21 after a woman reported finding her beagle dead on nearby property. According to police, the small dog had suffered a fatal wound to the rib cage, consistent with being struck by an arrow.
The woman also told officers her chocolate Labrador retriever was missing, prompting a wider search of the area. What police uncovered next left the community stunned — the two family pets had allegedly been targeted and killed by a father-son hunting duo.
Father and Son Identified as Suspects
Authorities later identified John Lowe, 58, and his son Hayden Lowe, 22, as the individuals believed to be responsible for the deaths of the dogs. The pair had reportedly been bow hunting for deer when the older Lowe decided to shoot the two pets that were roaming near the wooded area.
Investigators said another local hunter came forward, telling deputies that he heard the dogs moving through the woods, followed by loud whimpering and yelping. Moments later, the hunter said he encountered John Lowe, who allegedly admitted to killing the dogs and mentioned that he and his son were looking for a place to dispose of the bodies.
That information led police to locate the missing chocolate Lab, which had reportedly been discarded at another location by Hayden, according to the sheriff’s office.
Police Investigation and Arrests
When questioned by investigators, John Lowe confessed to shooting and killing both dogs, police said. His son allegedly assisted in trying to cover up the incident by moving one of the bodies.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that both men were arrested and charged in connection with the case. John Lowe faces two felony counts — one for killing a domestic animal and another for obstruction of justice. Hayden Lowe has been charged with felony obstruction of justice.
After being booked, the father and son were both released on cash bond, pending further court proceedings.
Community Outrage and Legal Ramifications
The killings have drawn widespread outrage from local residents and animal welfare advocates. Many are calling for stronger penalties for those who harm companion animals. Under Indiana law, intentionally killing a domestic pet without justification is a felony offense that can carry prison time and significant fines.
Community members have expressed anger and heartbreak over the senseless deaths, emphasizing that the dogs were beloved family pets, not wild animals. The La Porte County Humane Society and other local rescue groups have voiced support for the victim’s family and have urged the public to remain vigilant when allowing pets outdoors during hunting season.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Both defendants are expected to appear in La Porte County court later this month. Investigators have not disclosed a motive, though authorities say it appears the killings were intentional acts rather than accidental misidentification during hunting.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible hunting practices and respect for private property. “This tragic situation could have been avoided entirely,” the statement read.
As the case moves forward, prosecutors say they intend to seek maximum penalties for the defendants.
