by Batavia, Illinois — A violent domestic incident in a quiet western Chicago suburb has left a woman dead and her husband facing first-degree murder charges, after police say she was repeatedly stabbed and beaten with a hammer during an early-morning attack just days before Christmas.
Authorities say Hector Luvianos-Barrera, 37, is accused of killing his wife inside their Batavia apartment, later telling investigators he acted in self-defense — a claim prosecutors strongly dispute.
Early-Morning 911 Call Leads Police to Scene
According to the Batavia Police Department, the incident unfolded during the early morning hours Tuesday at an apartment on Church Street, located in Batavia on the western edge of the Chicagoland metro area.
Police said a 911 call was placed around 4:30 a.m., made by Luvianos-Barrera himself. Responding officers found him outside the residence, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Inside the apartment, officers discovered the defendant’s wife suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries. Despite emergency efforts by paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Victim Identified as 43-Year-Old Woman
The Kane County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Noemi Parada Narvaez, 43. Police described the incident as domestic-related, though initial public details were limited.
More disturbing allegations emerged during a court hearing held on Christmas Eve, where prosecutors outlined what they described as an exceptionally brutal killing.
Prosecutors Describe “Brutal and Violent” Attack
According to a courtroom report from the Daily Herald, Assistant State’s Attorney Tyler Cox told the judge that Luvianos-Barrera stabbed his wife 20 to 30 times in the head, along with an additional 20 to 25 stab wounds to her back, neck, and chest.
Prosecutors further alleged that the defendant repeatedly struck the victim with a hammer, delivering blows to both her body and head. By the end of the attack, Cox said, the woman had suffered extensive lacerations and a fractured skull.
The victim was later found lying face down on the floor, with a blanket covering her body, according to prosecutors.
Defendant Claims Self-Defense
Despite the severity of the injuries, Luvianos-Barrera allegedly told police he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors sharply rejected that assertion during the hearing, describing the violence as far exceeding any legitimate claim of self-defense.
“This was a brutal and violent attack that went well beyond any inkling that it was self-defense,” Cox told the court.
According to the prosecution, Luvianos-Barrera said the evening began with the couple drinking alcohol and watching a movie, before tensions escalated. He allegedly told investigators that his wife accused him of infidelity and began throwing objects at him.
The defendant claimed he attempted to calm the situation by hugging her, but said he then realized she was holding a knife behind her back.
Alleged Confession Details Revealed in Court
Prosecutors said Luvianos-Barrera told police he managed to pry the knife away and push his wife down, but claimed she continued to resist. At that point, he allegedly admitted to stabbing her repeatedly and striking her with a hammer.
“I defended myself and exceeded myself and killed her,” the defendant allegedly told investigators, according to court testimony.
Prosecutors argued that the number and severity of wounds directly contradict any claim of defensive force, noting the sustained and repeated nature of the attack.
Charged With Two Counts of First-Degree Murder
Luvianos-Barrera now faces two counts of first-degree murder. He appeared before John Barsanti, a judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit, during the Christmas Eve hearing.
The court ordered Luvianos-Barrera held without bond at the Kane County Jail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the alleged brutality of the crime.
Next Court Appearance Scheduled
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare for the next phase of the case. Luvianos-Barrera is scheduled to appear in court again on January 2.
