The Texas Game Wardens rescued hundreds of turtles and fingerling-sized catfish earlier this week after seizing seven illicit hoop nets.
In a Facebook post, the agency said that a fishing guide from the area had contacted local wardens after seeing a Mexican commercial fishing vessel in action on the Texas side of Falcon Lake earlier this week. They found seven hoop nets and took them.
The water was replenished with hundreds of turtles and catfish that were no bigger than fingerlings.

The area’s Game Wardens have confiscated thousands of feet of non-compliant monofilament gill and garnet in the last several weeks.
The post noted that unlawful nets can harm local ecosystems by capturing all aquatic life in a given area, which prevents future fishing chances, and they do not differentiate between fish sizes or species.
The illegal netting techniques on Falcon Lake are being actively controlled by the game wardens in Starr, Jim Hogg, and Zapata counties.
