A major freeway project is set to begin today in Oakland County.
The opening phase of the $269 million I-96 Flex Route project will close both the eastbound and westbound I-96 shoulders between Kent Lake Road and the I-275/I-696/M-5 interchange to allow for tree and brush removal in areas immediately adjacent to the freeway.
Then the actual construction of the I-96 Flex Route will begin next Monday, March 21.
While the work will allow the freeway to remain open, there will be associated lane and ramp closures including at Kent Lake, Milford and Wixom roads. Starting in late May, those ramps will be shut down for approximately six months.
